I would like to tell you a true story.

In 1980, after many years of saving from his modest salary, a hardworking Master Sergeant with 22 years in the U.S. Army spent $5,000 to buy a diamond and fulfill a 20-year promise to his wife. About three years later, during his training as a diamontologist and gemologist, his son noticed that the stone was showing signs of wear on the ridges between the facets, something that a diamond should never do. A jeweler confirmed that this Master Sergeant had spent his savings on a cubic zirconia worth only $5.

He was heartbroken as much as embarrassed and angry. Legal prosecution of the dealer followed — many people had been cheated — but this man’s wife never received a real diamond because the savings were already spent.

The rest of the story? That Army sergeant was my father, who passed in 1993. And I was the son who had to tell his father he had been cheated.
