Diamond Cut: What is a Sarin
evaluation and
how much value does it provide?
-- Lawrence B., Arizona

GIA certificates. These are the most popular and respected by consumers.
However, older GIA certs do not have all the information you will need
to judge every aspect of a diamond's beauty. But as of January 2006, GIA certificates include a cut grade, which assesses the total effectiveness of the cut in bringing out the full beauty of the stone. This is crucial if you want to know how a stone performs without seeing it.
If
perfection of cut is important to you, you should consider buying
a diamond with a certificate from AGS. This highly-respected
lab have been including all these details in their reports for years. For a diamond
with an old GIA cert, you will need to have the stone evaluated for
proportions using an instrument called a Dia Mension or Dia Pro
from Sarin Technologies. Due to the expense of the equipment,
only a few major dealers have one. GIA Gem Trade Laboratory can
provide this analysis upon request. Other companies provide this
service as well. You can find out more about these instruments
at the Sarin
Web site.
